People who have been driving for years know that there is a distinct difference between a right turn and a left turn. Luckily, the DMV allows parents to help their children through the learning process. While practicing to drive, every aspect should have some time dedicated to practicing. By devoting time to learning left turns, parents can ensure that their teens know how to make a left turn properly.

Staying safe while behind the wheel means knowing everything about driving, including how to make a left turn.

Long time drivers know the difference between when they make a left turn and when they make a right turn. Pass that knowledge on to teens.

Starting a Left Turn

Much like making a right turn, the first steps help ensure a safe turn. It’s important to slow the vehicle down and obey all traffic signs and signals. When approaching the left turn lane, signal to other drivers your intent. This time can also be used to notice any pedestrians who intend to cross the street, bicycles, and other vehicles that may be in your line of traffic.

Steering

Once you’ve checked that your pathway is clear, begin to steer the car into the left turn lane or left turn center lane. If there is no left turn center lane, double check that your signal is on signifying your upcoming turn. Slow the vehicle down to a safe speed and glance left and right. Do not turn the wheel of your car until you’re ready to make the turn.

The Left Turn

Once you have the right of way or a safe clearing in opposite traffic, glance to the left once more. You can begin to turn the wheel and progress the vehicle forward slowly. Leave your foot over the brake without depressing it in case you need to stop suddenly. Once you’ve completed the turn, you can move your foot from over the brake to the gas. Slowly press the gas and straighten out the wheel.

When making a left turn, you will often come across a center divider or another lane of traffic. Calculate the amount of space you need to complete the turn safely.
